Discover Lake Burton in Beautiful North Georgia

By Janan Talafer

Located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Lake Burton is less than a two-hour drive from Atlanta, but it’s a world apart. Lush forests, waterfalls, mountain hillsides and Georgia’s most pristine, beautiful lake create the perfect destination for weekend getaways as well as year-round living.

Horseback riding, white water rafting, hiking and spending a leisurely day boating, swimming or water skiing on Lake Burton are just a few of the adventures to be found in this picturesque community. Local wineries dot the area and charming historic downtown Clayton is filled with shops and cafés.

“We’re in the northeast corner of Georgia, close to the border of North and South Carolina,” says Julie Barnett of Harry Norman REALTORS®. “We say that summer here feels like spring. There’s always a cool breeze coming off the lake.”

Lake Burton is a 2,775-acre, man-made lake owned by the Georgia Power Company. “Not only is there no development permitted on the surrounding mountains but unlike similar lakes, Lake Burton stays full during the entire summer, allowing homeowners to have a stationary boathouse,” says Julie.

The community is a mecca for celebrities, business leaders and sports figures who have homes along the lake. Earlier this year, Nick Saban, head football coach of the University of Alabama, and Ken Wisenhunt, offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, joined the ownership group of Waterfall Club, an elite private club on Lake Burton that offers area residents a wealth of amenities, from top-rated golf to tennis, an indoor heated Olympic pool, fitness center, spa and dining.

Whether buyers are looking for a cottage on the lake for fishing or a beautiful lakeside or mountain estate, Julie and Leigh Barnett have more than 25 years of experience helping families find the right home or property. “Our buyers are looking for that perfect location where they can escape to the lake and the mountains for quality family time,” says Julie. “We are seeing great demand. People are feeling optimistic about the economy and looking for ways to enhance their lifestyle in this beautiful scenic part of Georgia.”
