Rockledge by the Sea

Laguna Beach is known as an Art Colony. It achieved this reputation due to many well-known artists living and painting or coming here on extended stays to paint. The first artist to visit was Norman St. Clair in the mid-1890s. Not long after that, Gardner Symonds, a nationally known artist trained at the Chicago Art Institute, visited and bought property in 1903. At that time, most of Laguna was undeveloped and Symonds had his choice of many exceptional view properties. He purchased land and built a home at 2419 S. Coast Highway. We can assume he chose this locale because it had the most scenic stretch of coastline.

Probably the best known plein-air artist from California was Guy Rose. Rose was friendly with Symonds, as were many other accomplished artists. Many of these painters were guests of Symonds and painted this stretch of the coast. The Irvine Museum has spectacular paintings done by both Rose and Symonds of the Rockledge coastline.

Currently, there is a special home offered for sale. It is located just three doors away from Symonds’ former home. It is a dramatic Cape Cod-style estate in a very private oceanfront setting. Entering this unique home is a special treat. A curved brick pathway leads past a large guest house and black bottom pool surrounded by a tropical paradise of ferns, trees and flowers. The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath home consists of 4,150 square feet. The 750-square-foot guest house features two bedrooms and one bath. In the home, the main level features an open or great room concept with living, dining and gourmet kitchen, all with pegged hardwood floors. There is a very large deck adjacent to the living area with beautiful views. The lower level offers an additional living/family area with fireplace and walk-in wine cellar. The spacious master suite has an adjacent private deck to enjoy the Catalina sunsets.

The beautifully landscaped grounds boast a large gazebo and several other secluded areas for relaxing while gazing at the ocean. A separate stairway leads to a private lower deck perched just above the ocean.

The complex is secured by an entry gate and parking is served by a three-car garage with extra parking for three additional vehicles.
