Winter Get Aways

By Alyssa Mammano

To escape the winter or to embrace it? That is the question.

In our home state of Florida, where the offices of the duPont REGISTRY reside, our Floridian blood runs a bit thinner. During these winter months, when the temperatures drop below our favorable 78 degrees Fahrenheit, winter jackets, hats and gloves begin to make more frequent appearances. The air conditioning is switched over to heat and we look forward to cozying up by the fireplace and planning our (deeper) southern escape.

Oddly enough, though, there are people in other pockets of the world who look forward to the first snowfall of the year. Front lawns and houses blanketed in a layer of soft white powder, untouched fields of sparkling white snow and the perfect packing consistency for a spontaneous snowball fight are all seasonal surprises that snow-lovers look forward to each year.

Though our ideals of the perfect winter getaway may differ, we’re all dreaming of a seasonal sabbatical just the same. So, here we designate three tropical retreats and three winter wonderlands optimal for either preference.

Mexico

South of the border and nearer to the warmth of the equator is exactly the place to be this time of year. Cities such as Cozumel, Cancun and Cabo have wonderful resort amenities and all-inclusive destinations. Tourist attractions such as the Mayan ruins, Monte Alban and the National Museum of Anthropology will keep the family occupied when you’re not busy sipping cervezas by the pool. Luxury villa rentals are available on the beach to sleep your entire group. The whole family will wake to glorious sunrises just steps from pristine sandy beaches and lapping ocean waves.

The Caribbean

Off to the east of Mexico, The Caribbean islands encompass a tropical oasis of diverse vacation opportunities. Miles and miles of sugary sand beaches draw snowbirds to the coasts, while dense rainforests and immense waterfalls attract adventure-seekers inland. The locals celebrate their heritage through music and dance, local cuisine and luxury villas constructed with fine local craftsmanship. Private resorts boast spectacular stretches of sand and infinity-edge pools so as to not distract from the inspiring views of turquoise blue Caribbean Sea waters.

Hawaii

Further west surrounded by the vast Pacific Ocean lies the Hawaiian Islands, our third tropical destination for a warm winter getaway. The pleasing seasonal warmth equates suitably to the warm welcome from Hawaiian locals. Dive deep into a colorful array of marine life aboard the Atlantis Submarines, soar over active volcanos and waterfalls in a helicopter tour, or zip line through the mountains among the treetops of the Poipu Resort. Adventure awaits on each unique Hawaiian island.

New England

Imagine that picture-perfect snow-covered postcard and the image in your mind’s eye will be New England in the winter. Blanketed in a pristine white powder that sparkles against the street lanterns is an old-world scene of traditional homes where flames are ablaze in brick fireplaces and candlelight flickers perfectly centered in each paned glass window. It is the perfect destination for a romantic winter getaway. Travel back in time to a family-friendly place where neighbors greet each other with a warm embrace.

Colorado

For skiing and snow sports, there is no better place in the United States than Colorado. Vail boasts 5,289 acres of prime skiing and snowboarding terrain, while Breckenridge celebrates the largest historic district within the state. Beaver Creek is bursting with luxury boutiques, galleries and an array of fine dining options. An abundance of eateries and local watering holes keep Colorado city streets awake well into the evening, while multitudes of cozy lodges with fireplaces ablaze keep the family comfortable indoors.

Canada

Canada offers the best of both worlds in both skiing and sightseeing. Commanding mountain ranges present opportunities for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and skill levels. Extreme winter sports enthusiasts will delight in Whistler Blackcomb, where heli-skiing is an alluring attraction. The famous PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola rise also presents an enticing option for entertainment. Once you faired your share of the peaks, the city below offers unlimited dining, drinking and dancing the night away.
